Background checks are required for volunteers who may be alone with students

Madison City Schools are blessed with dedicated, talented volunteers who help our students reach their goals.  We certainly want to welcome volunteers into our schools.  At the same time we have a duty to make sure our schools remain safe for our students.

Volunteers who will be under the supervision of a teacher DO NOT need a background check.  An example of this type of volunteer would be someone who comes to read to the class while the teacher is present.  They are never alone with students.  All volunteers MUST, however, scan their license at the Lobby Guard kiosk in the school's lobby.  This does initiate a check against the National Sex Offender Registry.  It also logs the volunteer's visit.

Volunteers who may be alone with students MUST have an additional background check.  An example of this type of volunteer would be a field trip chaperone who may be in charge of a small group of the students.  It could also be a volunteer in the building who may tutor students individually in a location outside the classroom (media center, computer lab, etc.).  We ask that these volunteers request a background check at the Madison County Courthouse.  There is a $10 fee.  Details of this procedure are on the attached document.  Volunteers should return this background check to the administration at the school where they are volunteering.  The background check must be done once per school year.  All volunteers, even those going on field trips, must always scan their license through the Lobby Guard kiosk in the lobby of the school.

The background check mentioned above DOES NOT meet the requirement of a full background check for employment with Madison City Schools.
