Welcome

                                                                                                                        August 10, 2012

 Dear Horizon Parents,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to a new school year at Horizon Elementary! Our teachers have been hard at work designing instruction and preparing classrooms for students. This year promises to be exceptional due to the dedication and excitement of all those who walk through our doors and work within our walls.

This year, one of our focuses is leadership with emphasis on Stephen Covey’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Our recent book study on The Leader in Me by Stephen Covey outlines an effective school program that will guide us as we integrate leadership principles into our school’s culture and curriculum. This approach to instruction will empower students as leaders, increase self-confidence and instill skill sets that will ensure our students are prepared for success.

The best way to prepare the next generation for the future is by emphasizing the value of communication, cooperation, initiative, and unique, individual talent. Nothing undermines confidence more than comparison. Our goal is for students to become an integral part of our Caring School Community as they grow together as leaders and learners. Whether in the classroom or at home, it is never too early to start applying leadership skills to everyday life.

This year, we have placed our parent-student handbook in your child’s classroom as well as on our school’s web site. Please take time to read over this as it will answer many of your questions. Most importantly, please take a look at our procedures for student drop-off and pick-up. In order for traffic to flow smoothly and to create a safe environment for our children, it is imperative that we work cooperatively with one another. In addition, please pay close attention to the dress code section of our parent-student handbook. I respectfully request that you help us enforce all of our procedures.

I know that this school year will be one filled with great achievements.  Please join us in making this experience a remarkable one. Remember, my door is always open. Thank you in advance for your support.

 With Horizon Pride,

 Rodney K. Richardson
