Welcome to Horizon's Counseling and Guidance Program

Our theme for 2012-2013 is

Caring School Community

What is School Counseling?   The major emphasis of an elementary guidance program is to aid in the successful development of the whole child.

Counseling Is For Everyone Each student is a worthy individual possessing unique qualities, abilities and needs. Elementary counseling focuses on identifying needs of all students. Children face hindrances which may range from simply having a bad day to learning difficulties. Elementary counselors help address these issues. Counseling adheres to the premise that a person has the right to dignity as a human being without regard to race, sex, religion, color, socio-economic status or handicapping condition.

What is a School Counselor? A school counselor is a certified, specially trained, caring person who helps all students. The counselor works with the teachers, parents, and staff.

 Counselors Help Students:

  • Make school a successful experience
  • Develop effective communication skills
  • Learn appropriate behavior patterns
  • Recognize and make the best use of their capabilities
  • Build skills for coping with life changes and crises
  • Develop decision making and personal safety skills
